MODERN DANCE PERFORMANCE: Bach - Xenakis

Pedro Carneiro (percussions, Portugal)
Teresa Simas (dancer and choreographer, Portugal)

At the age of 28, Carneiro is one of the most outstanding percussionist in the world. He performs regularly in Europe, the USA and also in the Far East. Carneiro says that the reason behind him becoming a percussionist, is the music of the famous 20th century Greek composer Iannis Xenakis who gave new meaning to percussion music. The Marimba Concerto “Ardor” by Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür is dedicated to Carneiro.
Teresa Simas studied classical ballet in Russia and modern dance in the USA. She is a long-standing member of one of the most prestigious European dance companies, the Gulbekain Ballet.

The performance that combines percussion music, modern dance, light effects and video projections is an imaginary dialogue between the Greek poetess Sappho and Xenakis. The composer communicates with the poetess through his own music and Sappho answers back through the music of Bach. Xenakis’ music is powerful, direct, gripping, sharp and interesting – he changes strict mathematical constructions and abstract concepts into exciting life and meaningful world of sounds … the same was done by Bach several centuries ago. The premiere of the performance “Bach – Xenakis” took place at London Rhythm Sticks Festival on the memory of Xenakis in 2001 (the year he died).

EKSOOTIC PROMENADES: Terra incognita

Hedvig Hanson (vocal)
Andre Maaker (quitar)

At a jazzy late-night concert one can hear music from ballades to afro rhythms. The spice is added by the improvisation of the musicians and their spontaneous dialogue with the audience. The title song of the concert “Terra incognita” was written by Hedvig Hanson and Andre Maaker.
In 2003 Hedvig Hanson won several awards for her concert performances and her first international CD: the Estonian Radio awarded her with the title of the Musician of the Year. At the Estonian Music Awards she received the award of the Female Artist of the Year. Hedvig Hanson has signed an agreement with the recording company Universal. Her second CD will be released next year.
Hedvig is "totally intoxicating and mesmerizing, and there´s something very "mojito" about her jazz – cool like nordic ice, refreshing like mint, with sweet and sensual Brazilian influences in her vocals..." (Billboard).
