Andres Paas, the main organiser and artistic director of the festival is continuing the nice tradition and will open the festival also this time. Throughout the years, the renowned and beloved pianist has performed music together with several top musicians, both from Estonia and abroad. This time he will perform together with two distinguished young Estonian musicians residing abroad Anna-Liisa Bezrodny and Indrek Leivategija. Anna-Liisa Bezrodny, residing in Great Britain, is a successful Estonian violinist having been recognized most with First Prizes at many international competitions. She is a concerto soloist as well as chamber musician performing actively on international stages. Cellist Indrek Leivategija, now residing in Germany, has despite of his young age succeeded in becoming one of the best cellists of Estonia. Just recently he won the First Prize in the renowned "Salieri - Zinetti" Chamber Music International Competition in Verona, Italy.
The programme of the opening concert is delightful and romantically passionate. The trio is going to play Naissoo´s Piano Trio, Sibelius´s Humoresques, Rimsky-Korsakov´s The Golden Cockerel in Zimbalist´s setting and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 49 No. 1.

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, conductor Daniel Reuss

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is one of the best-known Estonian classical music performers in the world. During its 29 years of existence the choir has performed in most of the European countries, the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, etc. The choir has made numerous recordings for renowned recording companies such as Harmonia Mundi, ECM, Virgin Classics, Carus, et al. It has also won the Grammy award for Best Choral Performance in 2006. EPCC often participates in prominent festivals and it has also collaborated with various distinguished conductors, such as Claudio Abbado, Neeme Järvi, Nikolai Alekseev and others, and orchestras, such as Australian, Prague and Stuttgart Chamber Orchestras, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Concerto Copenhagen and many others. Since the season 2008/2009 the artistic director and chief conductor of the choir is Daniel Reuss from Holland.
In Kuressaare the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir will perform an interesting and varied programme of sacred choir music written by Estonian composers.

A performance called "Dialogues. Pas de Guitare" is a mixture of guitar music and modern dance performed by an Estonian top guitarist Tiit Peterson and our top ballerina Kaie Kõrb. A man and a woman. Southern music full of passion opposing restrained Nordic mentality. A guitar, human body, human soul.
Tiit Peterson introduces an exciting assortment of 20th century guitar music by several composers from Cuba, Spain, France, Tunisia and elsewhere. These beautiful melodies and complex rhythm combinations will challenge one of Estonia’s most beloved prima ballerina who this time will put herself to test in plastic dance.
The author of the choreography is Dmitri Hartšenko who has had long artistic collaboration with both Kaie Kõrb and Tiit Peterson in very varied projects. Lighting is being taken care of by Triin Hook whose work will add colour to the general mood of the performance.

Calmus Ensemble celebrated their ten years of performing music together expansively. The quintet with an active concert schedule is highly acclaimed in international level, they have performed in several prestigious concert halls, participated in festivals, both in Europe and also in North and South America. Among others, they have participated in renowned music festivals such as Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Bach Festival Leipzig, The International a cappella Week in Hannover and elsewhere. They have also received many well-known awards, among which the most important are ECHO Klassik Award (2009), first prize in International Concert Artists Guild (2009) in New York and others. Their CDs have been highly acclaimed by the critics and they have won several prizes.
The repertoire of the Calmus Ensemble is expanded and in Kuressaare they will perform with a varied prorgramme ranging from renaissance music to modern compositions.

Programme: Fado songs and Alentejo traditional songs

In our series of Exotic Promenades the festival will continue introducing Portuguese national music. South Trovadore is a vocal/instrumental ensemble, well known and popular in Portugal. It mainly performs national music from Alentejo, region in South Portugal. Their programme in our festival in Kuressaare is an exciting medley of fado – sunny song depicting human feelings – and tuna songs – a new type of music for Estonian audience who will most probably hear such music for the first time at this concert. The quartet has introduced Portuguese music in many places all over the world and everywhere they have only received utterly positive feedback after their brilliant concerts, both from the audience as well as from the critics. The first part of the concert is called Fado on the piano where the pianist and singer of the quartet Mario Moita gives a completely new tinge to fado by his own exceptional interpretation. His juicy and special style of handling the piano and his voice of sensual timbre has been enjoyed everywhere from Portugal to Japan.

The Garcia Abril Quartet, resident in Winterthur, Switzerland, was founded in 2004 and bears the name of one of Spain's most important contemporary composers, Antón García Abril. While the ensemble performs music from all styles and epochs, Spanish music holds a special place at the centre of their repertoire.
The García Abril Quartet is a highly renowned ensemble that has been invited to give several concerts in Switzerland, Italy, Spain and France including Trecastagni International Music Festival, Festival International de Guitare in Paris, ORPHEUS Festival concerts in Zurich, Festival Internacional de Musica de Malaga and others, to name a few.
The Garcia Abril Quartet has made numerous live recordings for Spanish National Radio with works by Haydn, Debussy, F. Martin, A. García Abril and others.
It has also recently been a prizewinner of the prestigious ORPHEUS-Konzerte and Migros-Kulturprozent chamber music competitions.
In Kuressaare they will perform enthralling string quartets by Spanish composers Turina and Garcia Abril, a premiere in Estonia.
