Andres Paas

Born in Kuressaare

Andres Paas – pianist, pedagogue and producer. He studied piano at the Georg Ots Music School in Tallinn from 1984 to 1988. He then continued his studies with Ada Kuuseoks and Ivari Ilja at the Estonian Academy of Music (EAM) from 1988 to 1993. From 1993 to 1996 he studied for his Masters with Professor Vilma Mallene at EAM. As well as studying piano and chamber music, he also studied organ from 1992 to 1995 (Professors Hugo Lepnurm, Ines Maidre). In 1998 he continued his studies with Professor Gulyàs Màrta, Istvàn Csurgay and Devich Jànos at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Andres Paas has participated in several master classes.
Today he is an active chamber musician, but he has also performed as a soloist of the symphonic orhestra and as a solo player. In 1995 he founded the international chamber music festival, Kuressaare Chamber Music Days, in his native town Kuressaare and has been the artistic director and producer of the festival since the beginning. He has also performed at the festival as part of an ensemble during twenty two summers.
In 2006 a double CD Kuressaare Chamber Music Days 10 was released.
He plays the piano in an ensemble HonEst Quintette which consists of Estonian and Hungarian musicians having performed together in Estonia, Hungary and France (Paris). He is also a member of the New Baltic Trio that unites musicians from the Baltic States. The trio has performed in the Baltic States, France (Baltic Cultural Festival in Paris), Hungary (Budapest Spring Festival), Germany (Baltic Music Festival Begegnungen am Baltischen Meer) etc.
Andres Paas is the head of the Chamber Ensemble Department of the Georg Ots Music School in Tallinn and a chamber ensemble teacher.
He has been the head organist in Kuressaare St Lawrence Church (1989-1995) and concertmaster (pianist-organist) of the Estonian National Male Choir (1995-2002).
He has also performed as an solo organist in famous cathedrals in Europe, such as Matthias Church in Budapest, Michaeliskirche in Hamburg, Catholic Cathedral in Moscow etc.

Prizes
Andres Paas is laureate of the Hendrik Krumm Culture Award (2014) and of the Kuressaare Fine Arts Award (1998) and in 2006 he was honoured with the Estonian Cultural Endowment’s regional award Kultuuripärl (Pearl of Culture).

He has performed in Baltic States, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Hungary, Germany, France, Italy, USA, Canada, Israel etc.
